Fire Safety Tips and Protocol

If you discover a fire, call 911 and DPS (202-806-1100) and evacuate. Only fight the fire if it is safe to do so.

Prevention — Contractors shall prepare and carry out an effective fire protection and prevention plan. This plan can be part of the accident prevention plan. Fire watch is expected after welding or torch work and must be documented. Good housekeeping requires the prompt removal and disposal of accumulations of combustible scrap and debris. Areas shall be maintained in an orderly safe manner.

Smoking — Smoking or other sources of ignition shall not be permitted in areas where flammable or explosive materials are stored or are present. There is a no smoking policy in effect within all our facilities.

Kitchen Fire Safety — Cleaning and degreasing of kitchen hoods shall be maintained for safety use of kitchen hoods. 

Electrical Safety

Contractors shall comply with the requirements published in the current revisions of the National Electrical Code, National Electrical Safety Code, and the National Fire Protection Association Standards, OSHA 29 CFR 1926 and 29 CFR 1019 as applicable.

Proper Storage of Flammable Liquids

Use Flammable cabinets when materials are not in use. Self-closing metal containers shall be used for disposal of waste saturated with flammable liquids. All job areas and laboratories must maintain proper storage of flammable liquids. These spaces are subject to inspection by Howard Fire Safety Personnel.
